Program or Programme

Program or Programme

Recently I saw someone pull up a fellow Brit on FB for spelling the word ´Program´ incorrectly; in the context of an old TV show. So what´s the difference, in short for American English audiences – none!

In the UK though, normally ´Program´ is reserved for uses relating to computers and ´Programme´ for other meanings of the word, for instance, a television programme, a theatre programme etc.

This could be problematic when translating to British English, if the context of a particular usage of the word in a document is unclear.

Perhaps, for instance, if the text switches between discussions of a proposed new in-house computer program and the envisaged programme of implementation.

No such problems for the American English translation!
